Mr. Ponder is the name of a Pelican in the Colin Thiele novel, Storm Boy, a much-loved read of Australians for several generations.
The original property in the Ponder Cottages Group is in bayside Shoalwater Western Australia, which is often visited by a flock of Pelicans who roost on an island just offshore from the property.
Mark and Susi, the owners of Ponder Cottages, decided to pay homage to this beautiful native bird by naming their holiday home after the character of one of them in Storm Boy.
It also seemed right for another reason; because to ponder means to deeply reflect on a question and to do that you need both time and space. As a result, Mark and Susi decided to create a series of properties to enable guests to do just that.
Established in 2018, Ponder Cottages was born from a simple philosophy: holidays should feel like home, only better. Our journey began in the seaside town of Shoalwater, Western Australia—home to the original “Mr. Ponder,” a local pelican reminiscent of the classic tale Storm Boy.
Inspired by that sense of coastal calm, we brought the Ponder spirit to the tropical shores of Nusa Lembongan.
We started with The Villa, a spacious sanctuary designed specifically for families and groups who need room to breathe, swim, and be together. As our guests’ needs grew, so did we, introducing The Hideaway for travelers seeking a quieter, more intimate escape.
With the upcoming launch of The Bungalow and The Apartment, our vision remains unchanged: to provide consistent quality, exceptional value, and a base for you to discover the magic of “Lembongan Time.”
